Fishing the Uncompahgre River
The Uncompahgre flows directly through Ouray and offers accessible wade fishing for brown and rainbow trout within walking distance of downtown. The river is gin-clear in late summer, demanding precise presentations and light tippet.
Public access is available at numerous pullouts along Highway 550 south of Ouray. Catch-and-release is encouraged on the upper river to preserve the wild trout population.
Gold Medal Fishing Day Trips
The Taylor River and Gunnison Gorge within two hours of Ouray are Gold Medal designated streams; the Cimarron River is also worth exploring (verify current designation) with exceptional wild trout populations. Guide services in Gunnison, Montrose, and Ouray run full-day float and wade trips.
Spring runoff (May–June) produces the largest fish but most challenging conditions. Late summer and fall offer clearer water, more technical fishing, and spectacular fall foliage.
Fishing Gear and Licenses
Ouray Sports and nearby gear shops carry flies tied locally to match the Uncompahgre's hatches — ask at the counter for what's working right now. Colorado fishing licenses are available online through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
