Top Hiking Trails Near Ouray

The Perimeter Trail loops the entire town at canyon rim level, delivering 360-degree views with minimal elevation gain — perfect for a first morning warm-up hike. Portland Trail climbs steeply to a historic mine portal with sweeping views of the box canyon below.

For waterfall seekers, Box Canyon Falls is a five-minute walk from downtown, plunging 285 feet through a narrow gorge. Cascade Falls Trail follows the Uncompahgre River to a multi-tiered waterfall visible from the road.

Backcountry and Alpine Hikes

Routes up to American Flats offer true alpine tundra above 12,000 feet. These hikes require a longer drive on 4x4 roads but reward with wildflower meadows, marmots, and panoramic San Juan views.
