Kayaking at Ridgway Reservoir
Ridgway State Park's reservoir is the closest paddling destination to Ouray — flat water with unobstructed views of the Sneffels Range rising dramatically to the south. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at the park marina in summer.
Early mornings produce the calmest conditions and best reflections of the peaks. The water is cold even in summer, so a wetsuit or drysuit is recommended for longer outings.
River Kayaking on the Uncompahgre
The Uncompahgre River below Ridgway offers Class I–II whitewater suitable for recreational kayaks and inflatable packrafts. Higher water in May and June creates more exciting conditions as snowmelt peaks.
For more serious whitewater, the Gunnison Gorge near Montrose (an hour north) is a premier Class III–IV river run accessible only by foot trail.
Paddle Days from The Lumberyard
Load your kayaks or head to Ridgway for rentals — either way, you're back in Ouray in time for dinner and an evening hot springs soak. The Lumberyard Condos has a storage area for equipment.
Book your mountain paddling trip at ouraycondos.com and bring the whole crew, including the dog.
