The Route: Engineer and Cinnamon Passes
The Alpine Loop crosses two major passes — Engineer Pass at 12,800 feet and Cinnamon Pass at 12,640 feet — linking Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City in a single epic loop. The full route takes six to eight hours depending on stops and conditions.
Engineer Pass is the more challenging leg, with steep shelves and loose rock that demands genuine four-wheel drive and good ground clearance. Cinnamon Pass is slightly more forgiving but still requires a capable vehicle. Passenger cars and most crossovers cannot complete this route safely.
What You'll See Along the Way
The loop passes through some of the highest drivable terrain in the United States. Wildflower meadows, remnant snowfields in July, and abandoned mine structures at elevations most hikers never reach create a visual sequence unlike any paved road.
American Basin, accessible off the Lake City segment, is one of Colorado's best wildflower destinations in late July. Sunrise Basin near Engineer Pass offers views that stretch into five counties on a clear day.

If you don't have a capable vehicle, Ouray and Ridgway both have 4WD Jeep and Bronco rental shops that cater specifically to the Alpine Loop. Rentals book out quickly in July and August — reserve well in advance.
