River-Polished Rock Pools Below the Canyon
The Baby Bathtubs are a series of smooth granite depressions in the Uncompahgre riverbed, sculpted by centuries of high-velocity snowmelt grinding rock into bowls and channels. In late summer when runoff slows, the pools fill with clear, cold water warm enough to wade in.
The name is immediately obvious when you see them — the larger pools are literally bathtub-sized, with smooth curved walls that look almost fabricated. Sunlight refracts through the shallow water onto the pale rock floor in a way that's uniquely photogenic.
Getting There and Water Safety
The pullout is on US-550 about three miles south of Ouray; a short scramble down to the river brings you to the pools. The approach is informal — no marked trail, just a well-worn path from generations of visitors.
Water levels vary significantly with snowpack and season. In June the river runs high and fast — the pools are submerged and wading is dangerous. By mid-July the flow typically recedes enough to make the pools accessible. Check conditions locally before visiting.
A Summer Afternoon from the Lumberyard
The Baby Bathtubs pair well with a Box Canyon Falls morning — spend the first half of the day at the falls, grab lunch on Main Street, then drive south to the pools for an afternoon. Dogs love the shallow cold water as much as the humans.
The Lumberyard Condos welcome dogs at no extra charge. Book your stay at ouraycondos.com for the best direct rate.
