Into the Gorge: What the Trail Delivers

Bear Creek Trail enters a narrow limestone gorge immediately after the trailhead on US-550 south of town. The trail follows the creek through a tight canyon where the walls close to within 20 feet — the kind of terrain that makes you feel genuinely deep in the mountains.

Multiple waterfalls cascade across the trail corridor as you gain elevation. The upper section breaks out of the gorge into open alpine terrain, and the ruins of the Yellow Jacket Mine sit near timberline with long views back toward Ouray.

Difficulty, Season, and Preparation

This is a strenuous hike with significant elevation gain — a sustained climb that is deceptively tiring due to altitude. Come prepared with layers, plenty of water, and lunch if you plan to reach the mine.

The trail is typically open from late June through early October. Snow lingers well into summer in the upper gorge — expect wet crossings and slippery rock even in July. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.
