A Geological Wonder at the Edge of Town

Box Canyon Falls is a city park tucked against the southern wall of the Ouray box canyon. Canyon Creek funnels through a narrow slot in the Precambrian rock before plunging 285 feet — the roar is audible from the parking area before you even reach the gate.

A short paved path leads to an elevated steel bridge that places you directly above the falls. The mist and sound are overwhelming in a way that photographs never quite capture — it's one of those places you have to stand in to believe.

The Upper Trail and Nesting Swifts

Above the main viewpoint, a steep trail climbs to a quieter overlook and continues into the canyon wall. In summer, black swifts nest inside the wet rock behind the falls — one of only a handful of known nesting sites in Colorado.

The upper trail is rocky and requires sturdy shoes. It connects to the Perimeter Trail for those who want to extend the walk into a longer loop around the canyon rim.

Getting There from The Lumberyard Condos

Box Canyon Falls is less than a ten-minute walk south along Main Street from The Lumberyard Condos. The park gate opens at 8am and closes at dusk; admission is $5–$7 depending on age.

Guests booking direct at ouraycondos.com often combine a morning visit to the falls with an afternoon soak at the Hot Springs Pool — both are walkable from the condos on the same flat stretch of town.
