The Easiest Waterfall Hike in Ouray
Cascade Falls Trail begins at the north end of Ouray, just past the amphitheater campground. The path is well-maintained dirt and gravel, gaining about 300 feet over half a mile — manageable for most fitness levels and suitable for older children.
The falls themselves emerge from a narrow channel in the canyon wall and drop in a single curtain of whitewater before spreading across a wide apron of rock. Runoff peaks in June and early July, making those weeks the most dramatic for photography.
What to Bring and When to Go
The trail is shaded by spruce and fir for most of its length, so it's a welcome retreat on hot summer afternoons when other exposed routes bake in the sun. Bring water, good footwear, and a camera — the light through the trees in late afternoon is particularly nice.
Dogs are allowed on leash, making this one of the better options for guests traveling with dogs. The Lumberyard Condos are dog-friendly — a significant differentiator in Ouray where many lodging options have restrictions.
Combining Cascade Falls with the Perimeter Trail
Experienced hikers can combine Cascade Falls with the Perimeter Trail for a longer half-day loop. The connection adds another 1,500 feet of elevation and transforms an easy walk into a serious workout with panoramic canyon views.
The Lumberyard Condos are less than a mile from the Cascade Falls trailhead. Book direct at ouraycondos.com for the best rate and no third-party fees.
