Why Ouray's Canyon Creates Great Thermals
The box canyon geography that makes Ouray so visually dramatic also creates reliable thermal columns in the afternoon. Sun-warmed rock faces generate rising air that experienced pilots use to gain altitude and extend flights over the surrounding ridgelines.
Hang gliding and paragliding are niche activities in Ouray compared to climbing or Jeeping, but the pilots who do fly here describe the aerial perspective of the canyon as unlike anything else in Colorado. Looking down from the level of the canyon rim reframes the geography entirely.
Access and Operator Information
Ouray does not have a dedicated hang gliding school, but several Telluride and Montrose-based operators offer tandem and instruction flights in the region. Contact the Ouray Visitors Center for current seasonal operator recommendations.
Certified solo pilots should research launch site access and local airspace restrictions before traveling — conditions and access points can change season to season. The San Juan Soaring Association can provide regional guidance for experienced pilots.
After Your Flight
The Hot Springs Pool is a natural recovery stop after any physically demanding activity in Ouray — and gliding, even in a tandem rig, can be surprisingly tiring. The pool is 9 blocks from The Lumberyard Condos.
