The World's Most Accessible Ice Park
The Ouray Ice Park occupies the Uncompahgre Gorge, a quarter-mile-long slot canyon where the city pipes water from above to create over 200 ice climbing routes each winter. The park is free and open to the public — you only need your own gear or a rental.
Routes range from beginner columns perfect for a first-timer to overhanging WI6 curtains that challenge elite climbers. The gorge walls are close enough that you can watch dozens of parties climbing simultaneously — a festival of ice axes and crampons.
The Ouray Ice Festival
Every January the Ouray Ice Festival transforms the park into a world-class competition venue. Professional athletes, clinics, gear demos, and evening events pack the town for four days. Accommodation books out months in advance.
If you're planning a festival trip, securing a reservation at The Lumberyard Condos early is strongly advised. The condos are walking distance from the gorge entrance, which matters a great deal when temperatures are in the single digits.
Gear, Guides, and Beginner Options
San Juan Mountain Guides and several other local outfitters offer half-day ice climbing lessons that include all necessary gear. This is the fastest way for a first-timer to get on real ice safely. Most lessons run two to four hours and leave from town.
The Lumberyard Condos make a natural base for a winter climbing trip — dog-friendly, with full kitchen facilities for early-morning pre-climb meals. Book direct at ouraycondos.com to avoid third-party fees.
