Riding Out from Downtown Ouray
Ouray's compact size and central location on US-550 make it an easy biking base. The paved path along the Uncompahgre River heading north toward Ridgway is a popular gentle option — a flat twelve-mile ride through the canyon with views the whole way.
The Million Dollar Highway to Silverton is a famous road cycling challenge — 25 miles of steep climbing, no shoulder in places, and breathtaking views. Experienced road cyclists time the ride for midweek mornings when RV traffic is lighter.
Singletrack and Technical Riding
The Ouray Trail Alliance maintains singletrack trails on the canyon walls that connect to the Perimeter Trail system. These routes are rockier and more technical than the valley-floor paths, with significant elevation gain and some exposed sections.
E-bike rentals have expanded the accessible range significantly — altitude is less limiting when you have motor assist. Several local outfitters now rent e-bikes and can suggest routes calibrated to your fitness and comfort level.
Returning to The Lumberyard Condos
After a ride, the Hot Springs Pool is the obvious next stop — just 9 blocks from The Lumberyard Condos. Secure bike storage is available at the property for guests traveling with their own bikes.
