A Bird's-Eye View of the Box Canyon
The Perimeter Trail is Ouray's signature hike — a full circuit of the canyon walls that surrounds the town on three sides. From the rim you look straight down into the valley, seeing the hot springs pool, the historic district, and the Uncompahgre River as a single panorama.
The trail is accessed from multiple points in town, including the south end near Box Canyon Falls and the north end near the campground. Most hikers start at the Box Canyon trailhead and travel counterclockwise to catch the best afternoon light on the western walls.
Trail Conditions and What to Expect
The trail involves some steep, rocky sections and a few exposed ridgeline stretches with significant drop-offs. Trekking poles are helpful but not required. The full loop takes two to three hours at a moderate pace.
Snow lingers on the northern aspects through June and can return as early as September. Check trail conditions with the Ouray Visitors Center before heading out in shoulder seasons. The trail is not appropriate for dogs on most sections due to the technical terrain.
Walking to the Trailhead from the Lumberyard
The Lumberyard Condos are within a ten-minute walk of the primary trailhead access points. No shuttle or car is needed — you can lace up boots at the condo door and be on the trail within minutes. This walkability is one of the biggest practical advantages of staying in central Ouray.
