Four Directions, Four Unforgettable Roads
Head south on US-550 and you're on the Million Dollar Highway within minutes — 25 miles of cliff-hugging curves to Silverton. Head north on 550 and within twenty miles you reach Dallas Divide, with one of the best Sneffels Range panoramas in Colorado. Head west on Camp Bird Road and you're climbing toward Yankee Boy Basin and Imogene Pass.
No other town of Ouray's size sits at such a convergence of iconic driving routes. A long weekend here can realistically include four entirely different landscapes without retracing a single mile.
Paved vs. 4WD Routes
The Million Dollar Highway, Dallas Divide, and the Ridgway/Ouray corridor are fully paved and accessible to any passenger vehicle. Yankee Boy Basin, the Alpine Loop, and Imogene Pass require high-clearance 4WD — rentals are available in Ouray and Ridgway.
Last Dollar Road between Ridgway and Telluride is a graded dirt road navigable by most passenger cars in dry conditions, offering aspen groves and mountain views without requiring a Jeep. It's a favorite among photographers in September during fall color season.
