Cold Mountain Water When the Sun Is High
On hot July and August afternoons when the trails are exposed and dusty, the Uncompahgre River offers the antidote. A flat bend in the river north of town forms a natural pool deep enough for swimming, with gravel banks suitable for towels and sunbathing.
The water is cold — fed by snowmelt at high elevation — but perfectly refreshing after a morning of hiking or biking. Locals and returning visitors know this spot; it sees noticeably less foot traffic than the Hot Springs Pool.
What to Expect and Water Safety
The swimming hole is informal — no lifeguard, no facilities, no admission. Current strength varies by season and can be deceptive in high-water years. Children should stay in the shallower edges; the center channel runs faster than it looks.
June flows are typically too high and fast for safe swimming. By mid-July the river settles into a gentler rhythm. The swimming hole is best after two or three weeks of dry weather, when clarity improves and flow stabilizes.
Dogs and a Walk from the Lumberyard
Dogs are allowed at the river and most love it — the cold water and open bank give them room to play. The Lumberyard Condos are dog-friendly, making an Ouray summer trip with your dog both practical and enjoyable.
Book direct at ouraycondos.com and skip the platform fees. The condos are about a mile south of the swimming hole — an easy bike ride or brisk walk.
