What Is a Via Ferrata?
Via ferrata — Italian for 'iron road' — is a system of fixed iron rungs, cables, and ladders attached directly to the rock face that allow hikers without formal climbing training to ascend technical terrain safely. You clip your via ferrata set to the cable as you move, providing a fall arrest system.
Ouray has developed several via ferrata routes in recent years, leveraging the canyon's vertical walls and the town's existing reputation as a technical mountain sports destination. The routes range from beginner-friendly to genuinely demanding sequences that satisfy experienced climbers.
