The Alpine Loop: Understanding Your Starting Position
The Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway is a 65-mile 4WD route connecting Ouray, Lake City, and Silverton via Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass — two of Colorado's most accessible high alpine 4WD routes. Both Ouray and Lake City serve as starting points, but they give you different approaches to the loop.
Starting from Ouray, you drive Engineer Pass southward — a dramatic ascent from 7,760 ft to 12,800 ft over 10 miles, with views that expand exponentially with every switchback. The Ouray approach is steeper and more immediately dramatic. From Lake City, the approach via Cinnamon Pass is longer and more gradual. Most experienced 4WD travelers prefer to do the loop in the Ouray-to-Lake City direction to experience the most dramatic scenery while fresh.
Town Amenities: What Each Offers
Lake City is genuinely tiny — under 400 year-round residents — with a charming but sparse main street: a general store, a few restaurants, some art galleries, and excellent fishing access on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison. The Silver Thread Scenic Byway connecting Lake City to South Fork is beautiful. For visitors who want genuine solitude and don't need much infrastructure, Lake City delivers it.
Ouray punches far above its population for amenities: hot springs, multiple full-service restaurants, an outfitter and gear shop, a rock climbing gym, a distillery, and lodging options from historic B&Bs to the Lumberyard Condos with 5 units and a dog-friendly policy. After a long day on Engineer Pass, having the hot springs pool 9 blocks from your door changes the trip.
The Best Way to Experience Both
The obvious answer for serious San Juan explorers is to drive the Alpine Loop in a single day, starting and ending in Ouray. Leave at 8am, drive Engineer Pass to Lake City (grab lunch at one of the saloons), drive Cinnamon Pass back through American Basin to Silverton, then return on the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray. That's 10–12 hours of pure high-alpine driving — one of the great adventure days in the American West.
Base at The Lumberyard Condos for that kind of loop day — you want a full kitchen for packing a real lunch, a dog-friendly policy if your Lab is coming along, and a hot springs pool for the evening after. Lake City is a day-trip destination from Ouray, not a competing base for the same trip.
Practical Considerations for Each Town
Lake City's lodging options are limited and fill early in summer — vacation rental inventory is small and concentrated. Cell service is limited throughout Hinsdale County. The nearest large grocery is in Gunnison (50 miles). These aren't dealbreakers for the right traveler, but they require planning.
Ouray has better cell coverage, City Market in Ridgway 10 miles away, and multiple lodging options at different price points. The Lumberyard Condos is available for direct booking at ouraycondos.com — the owners are reachable for logistical questions before and during your trip. That direct access matters when you're planning a remote 4WD adventure.
