Ouray vs Ridgway: Which Town Should You Base Your San Juan Trip From?

Ridgway is 10 miles north of Ouray and significantly cheaper. But Ouray has the canyon, the hot springs, and the altitude. Here's the tradeoff.

What Ridgway Offers

Ridgway is a genuinely pleasant small town — around 1,000 people, a well-regarded arts scene (True Grit was filmed nearby), Ridgway State Park with a reservoir for paddling and fishing, and a relaxed Western character. Lodging is cheaper than Ouray and more available in peak season. The Chipeta Solar Springs Resort is Ridgway's upscale option. Several excellent restaurants including Kate's Place round out a town that punches above its weight.

The Ridgway area is also where you find the best views of the Sneffels Range — the Mt. Sneffels massif seen from the Dallas Divide is one of Colorado's most photographed mountain panoramas. If you're a photographer who wants to catch the Sneffels Range at sunrise, Ridgway actually has better sightlines than Ouray.

What You Give Up Staying in Ridgway vs Ouray

The primary loss is the canyon. Ouray's box canyon is not a day-trip feature — it's the atmospheric reality of the entire stay. You're surrounded by 2,000-foot walls at all times. The town exists inside an improbable geological amphitheater. That experience disappears 10 miles north when you drop into the Uncompahgre Valley. Ridgway's setting is open and ranchy — beautiful in a different way, but not in the canyon.

The hot springs are also walkable only from central Ouray. From Ridgway, it's a 20-minute drive plus parking — a real friction barrier that most travelers end up negotiating rather than spontaneously enjoying. One of Ouray's signature experiences is stepping out of your condo at 9pm after a day on the passes and walking five minutes to a 104°F outdoor pool under the stars. That experience requires being in Ouray.

The Practical Compromise

Many San Juan travelers use Ridgway as a practical backup when Ouray is fully booked — particularly in peak July season. If The Lumberyard is unavailable for your dates and you find a Ridgway rental, you can drive the 15 minutes to Ouray daily for the hot springs and downtown access. It's not ideal, but it's workable.

The better approach: book The Lumberyard Condos at ouraycondos.com early, especially for July and August stays. The five units sleep up to 10 people — a larger group that fills the building is often the most cost-effective arrangement, and it removes any incentive to compromise with a Ridgway alternative.

Why Ouray Wins for Most Travelers

For the majority of San Juan trip types — adventure travel, hot springs relaxation, photography, hiking, 4WD — Ouray's in-canyon position is the right call. The extra cost (typically 15–25% higher than comparable Ridgway accommodation) is offset by the elimination of all driving to access the core experiences.

The Lumberyard Condos at 55 4th Ave is priced to be genuinely competitive within Ouray's vacation rental market, and its 9.9/10 VRBO rating means you're paying for quality you can verify from independent sources. Book direct at ouraycondos.com and save the platform fees on top.
