The Drive from Aurora to Ouray

Head west through Denver and pick up US-285 south through Fairplay and South Park, then connect to US-50 west through Gunnison and Montrose before dropping south on US-550 into Ouray. The stretch from Montrose to Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge is one of Colorado's most dramatic.

Leave Aurora early and you'll arrive in Ouray by early afternoon — plenty of time to check in, grab lunch on Main Street, and explore Box Canyon Falls before dinner.

Why Ouray Is Worth the Drive from the Metro

Ouray sits at 7,760 ft in a natural box canyon surrounded by 13,000-ft peaks — a world away from the Denver suburbs. The Ouray Hot Springs Pool, Victorian architecture, and access to the Alpine Loop 4WD route make it one of Colorado's most complete mountain destinations.

The town is small enough to feel genuine and large enough to eat and drink well. It's the mountain escape that Aurora residents come back to year after year.
