Getting There: Boulder to the San Juans
From Boulder, head south on US-36 to I-25, then west on US-50 through Cañon City, Salida, and Gunnison to Montrose, finishing on US-550 south into Ouray. The route is well-marked and the mountain scenery builds steadily from Salida onward.
Many Boulder travelers opt for a scenic detour over Independence Pass (open summer only) via CO-82 from Buena Vista — adding 30 minutes but delivering some of Colorado's finest alpine views.
What Boulder Adventurers Love About Ouray
Ouray rewards the outdoor-oriented Boulder crowd with hiking, jeeping, and climbing options that rival anything on the Front Range. The world-renowned Ouray Ice Park draws ice climbers every January, while summer trails like the Perimeter Trail and Chief Ouray Mine offer dramatic canyon views.
The hot springs pool and walkable Victorian downtown make it just as appealing for those who want to slow down. Ouray does adventure and relaxation equally well.
