From Colorado Springs to the Box Canyon
From Colorado Springs, head west on US-50 through Cañon City, Salida, and Gunnison before connecting to US-550 south into Ouray — a route that crosses multiple mountain passes and river valleys. The drive through the Arkansas River canyon west of Cañon City alone is worth the trip.
Salida makes a great midpoint stop for coffee or a quick stretch along the Arkansas River. From Gunnison to Montrose the landscape opens into wide ranchlands before the canyon walls close in again on the approach to Ouray.
What Waits in Ouray
Ouray is a historic Victorian mining town at 7,760 ft in a natural box canyon of the San Juan Mountains — called 'The Switzerland of America' for good reason. The Ouray Hot Springs Pool, Box Canyon Falls, and miles of 4WD mountain roads are all within minutes of downtown.
The ice climbing park draws athletes from across the country in winter, while summer brings hikers, jeepers, and photographers chasing the wildflower blooms above 11,000 ft. Whatever season you visit, the scenery is extraordinary.
