Making the Houston to Ouray Road Trip Work
From Houston, I-10 west to San Antonio and then I-25 north through Albuquerque and into Colorado is the primary route. From the Colorado border, US-285 west or I-25 north connects to roads leading to US-550 and Ouray.
A two-night drive — stopping in San Antonio and Albuquerque — is the most comfortable approach. Many Houston travelers prefer flying into Denver or Albuquerque and driving the last four to six hours to Ouray.
The Rocky Mountain Experience Houston Travelers Seek
Ouray delivers everything the Gulf Coast doesn't — cool mountain air, dramatic elevation, cascading waterfalls, and a small-town atmosphere measured in the hundreds rather than millions. The contrast from Houston's sea-level humidity to Ouray's 7,760-ft canyon is total.
Houston families and groups who make the trip often do it year after year. The hiking, hot springs, and authentic Colorado mountain town atmosphere create a repeat destination unlike anything available closer to Texas.
