The Portland to Ouray Road Trip Route
From Portland, I-84 east follows the Columbia River Gorge into Idaho, then I-15 south through Boise and Utah carries you to I-70 east into Colorado. From Grand Junction, US-50 east to Montrose and US-550 south brings you into Ouray.
A three-day drive — overnighting in Boise and Salt Lake City — turns the journey into a road trip worth taking for itself. Most Portland travelers fly into Denver and drive the final five hours to Ouray to maximize time in the mountains.
Ouray's Appeal for PNW Travelers
Portland visitors accustomed to the Cascades' volcanic drama find Ouray's sedimentary box canyon equally striking but entirely different — warmer, drier, and filled with a Victorian history the Pacific Northwest doesn't have. The mineral hot springs are a particular contrast to Oregon's cold mountain rivers.
Ouray's craft food and beer scene, live music, and outdoor recreation ethic also resonate strongly with the Portland crowd. It's a kindred spirit town 1,000 miles to the southeast.
