From Provo to the San Juan Mountains
Take US-6 east out of Provo over Spanish Fork Canyon to Price, then I-70 east into Colorado. From Grand Junction, US-50 east to Montrose and US-550 south puts you in Ouray — or for a more scenic route, US-191 south through Moab connects to Colorado's canyon country from the south.
Either way, the drive transitions beautifully from Utah's red rock landscapes into Colorado's green alpine forests and eventually the dramatic box canyon approach into Ouray.
Ouray's Appeal for Provo-Area Travelers
Ouray offers the kind of mountain hot springs, Victorian history, and alpine recreation that Provo-area outdoor enthusiasts love — but with a Colorado character entirely its own. The town's ice climbing park draws Utah climbers every winter, while summer jeeping on the Alpine Loop is a rite of passage.
For families, Ouray's compact, walkable layout and dog-friendly culture make it easier to manage than larger resorts. The hot springs pool is a highlight for every age group.
