The Route West from Pueblo
From Pueblo, US-50 west is a straight shot through Cañon City, Salida, and Gunnison — then US-550 south from Montrose drops you into Ouray through one of Colorado's most spectacular canyon approaches. The whole drive is scenic and free of major congestion.
Salida is roughly the halfway point and a great place to fuel up or grab breakfast before the mountain passes. Budget a bit of extra time in summer when tourist traffic slows the canyon sections.
Why Ouray Draws Travelers from Across the State
Tucked into a natural box canyon at 7,760 ft, Ouray is one of Colorado's best-preserved Victorian mountain towns. The Ouray Hot Springs, Box Canyon Falls Park, and access to the Alpine Loop Byway make it a destination that rewards every type of traveler.
The town is walkable, dog-friendly, and genuinely charming in a way that feels earned rather than manufactured. It's a rare find in a state full of tourist towns.
