The Route from Salt Lake City to Ouray
From Salt Lake City, I-15 south to US-6 east takes you over Spanish Fork Canyon into Price and then I-70 east to the Colorado border. From there, US-191 south through Moab and Monticello connects to US-491 north to Cortez, and US-550 north delivers you into Ouray.
Alternatively, some travelers prefer the I-70 corridor through Grand Junction and Montrose before turning south on US-550 into Ouray — a slightly more direct route with excellent mountain scenery.
What Sets Ouray Apart from Utah's Mountain Towns
Salt Lake City visitors often compare Ouray favorably to Park City or Moab — it has the alpine setting of Park City and the dramatic geology of Moab, wrapped in Victorian history. The natural hot springs and ice climbing park add dimensions those Utah towns can't match.
Ouray's box canyon setting is genuinely unique in the Rocky Mountain West — the walls rise 2,000 ft straight up from the town, creating one of the most dramatic small-town settings anywhere in the US.
