The Drive from Salt Lake City to Ouray
From Salt Lake City, US-6 east over Spanish Fork Canyon leads to Price, then I-70 east across the Colorado border to Grand Junction. US-50 east from Grand Junction reaches Montrose, where US-550 south takes you into Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge.
The route transitions beautifully through Utah's canyon country and Colorado's high desert before climbing into alpine terrain. Total drive time is approximately six hours without major stops.
Ouray Through Utah Eyes
Salt Lake City residents accustomed to the Wasatch Front's scale will find Ouray's box canyon setting immediately familiar — but with Victorian history, natural hot springs, and an intimate town-center character that Utah's larger resorts don't offer.
The Alpine Loop 4WD route and the historic jeep roads radiating from Ouray are a particular draw for Utah off-road enthusiasts looking for a new challenge on Colorado terrain.
