Planning the Tucson to Ouray Drive
From Tucson, I-10 east to I-25 north takes you through New Mexico, crossing into Colorado near Trinidad. From Walsenburg head west on US-160 through Alamosa and over Wolf Creek Pass, connecting to US-160 west toward Durango and then US-550 north into Ouray.
The drive is best split over two days — a night in Albuquerque or Durango makes the journey comfortable and the Colorado mountain scenery on day two feels like a reward.
Summer Relief at 7,760 Feet
When Tucson summers are at their most brutal, Ouray sits cool and comfortable in its canyon — afternoon highs in the 70s, cold nights, and the constant sound of waterfalls. It's a natural air conditioner built into the San Juan Mountains.
Ouray has its own hot springs pool for cool evenings, miles of shaded canyon trails, and a historic downtown with excellent restaurants and craft beer. It's the complete opposite of a Tucson July.
