The Drive from Tulsa to Colorado's Canyon Country
From Tulsa, I-44 west to Oklahoma City connects to I-40 west toward Amarillo. From Amarillo, head north through New Mexico on US-87 or I-25 into Colorado, then west on US-285 and north on US-550 into Ouray.
Splitting the trip with an overnight in Oklahoma City or Amarillo is the most comfortable approach. The New Mexico-to-Ouray stretch on day two is particularly rewarding as the landscape shifts from high desert to alpine canyon.
Why Tulsa Explorers Come to Ouray
Ouray offers the concentrated mountain experience that Tulsa outdoor enthusiasts drive to Colorado for — hot springs, hiking, jeeping, and a preserved Victorian downtown all within walking distance of each other. It's Colorado's best small-town package.
The San Juan Mountains' wildflower season in July and August draws photographers and hikers from across the Midwest. Ouray sits at the heart of it all.
