Top 4WD Routes from Ouray
Engineer Pass (12,800 ft) via Henson Creek is the most accessible major pass from Ouray — rated moderate, it's suitable for newer off-road drivers with a capable vehicle. The route passes through old mining camps and offers sweeping views of the San Juans.
Imogene Pass (13,114 ft) is the highest improved road in Ouray County — a challenging but thrilling route connecting Ouray to Telluride. The summit views are among the best in Colorado. Narrow sections require experience and confidence.
The Alpine Loop and Beyond
The Alpine Loop National Back Country Byway is the signature circuit — 63 miles connecting Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City via Engineer and Cinnamon Passes. Plan a full day with stops at Animas Forks ghost town and the high-elevation meadows.
Yankee Boy Basin Road (4WD from the upper section) is the most spectacular wildflower route in the San Juans, accessible to most stock 4WDs. The lower section is paved and open to all vehicles.
