Fall Foliage

Ouray Colorado Fall Foliage Guide

September in the San Juans may be the most beautiful month of the year — golden aspens, crisp air, and crowds that have gone home.

At a Glance

  • Aspen Peak: Sep 15–Oct 5
  • Last Dollar Road: Best aspen drive
  • Alpine Loop: Gold from end to end
  • Crowds: 30% vs summer

When and Where Fall Color Peaks

In the Ouray area, aspen color typically peaks between September 15 and October 5 — though this varies by 1–2 weeks depending on the year. Higher elevations (Alpine Loop) peak slightly earlier than lower valleys. Check the Colorado Fall Foliage map from Colorado Parks & Wildlife for current reports.

The drive from Ouray toward Telluride via Last Dollar Road is widely considered the best fall color drive in Colorado — a dirt road through dense aspen groves with the Dallas Divide in the background.

Best Fall Color Drives and Hikes

The Alpine Loop in late September turns gold from end to end — the combination of gold aspens, red willows, and dark spruce against the grey scree of 13,000-foot peaks is extraordinary. The ghost town of Animas Forks surrounded by fall color is a defining San Juan image.

The Ouray Perimeter Trail in fall offers canyon views framed by golden aspens on the rim. The Bear Creek Trail passes through dense aspen stands at mid-elevation — one of the most color-saturated hiking experiences in the region.
