Fall Foliage in the San Juans
The San Juan Mountains may have the most dramatic fall color in Colorado. Dense aspen groves blanket the mountain slopes from 8,000 to 11,000 feet — when they turn gold in late September, the contrast against dark spruce and red canyon walls is extraordinary.
Imogene Pass, Last Dollar Road near Telluride, and the road to Yankee Boy Basin are the top fall color drives. The Alpine Loop peaks slightly earlier — plan for the third week of September.
Fall Hiking and Activities
September brings cooler temperatures, fewer afternoon thunderstorms, and significantly smaller crowds than summer. The Perimeter Trail and Bear Creek Trail are at their best in fall — crisp air, golden light, and almost no one else on the trail.
The Ouray Hot Springs Pool is especially appealing in fall — cool evenings make the warm geothermal water feel even better. The pool stays open through the fall season.
Fall at The Lumberyard
Fall is the locals' favorite season, and The Lumberyard Condos in fall is quieter, more affordable, and more atmospheric than peak summer. The canyon walls turn gold and red — the view from the property is itself worth the trip.
Book a fall stay at ouraycondos.com. September weekends book early despite being 'shoulder season' — don't wait.
