Best Photo Locations in and Around Ouray
The overlook on US-550 just south of Ouray offers the iconic box canyon view — the town nestled in the valley with peaks rising on three sides. Sunrise and sunset paint the canyon walls in orange and pink. The view northbound on the Million Dollar Highway toward Red Mountain is equally dramatic.
Box Canyon Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfall shots in Colorado — a narrow gorge with a 285-foot falls visible through a slot in the rock. The tight canyon walls create a natural frame. Best light is midday in summer when sun penetrates the gorge.
Ghost Towns and Alpine Landscapes
Animas Forks ghost town near Engineer Pass offers incredible architectural photography against a massive alpine backdrop. The two-story cabin with its bay window is a classic shot. Visit in late September for aspen color framing the buildings.
Yankee Boy Basin in late July delivers wildflower carpets below Mt. Sneffels — one of the most photographed landscapes in Colorado. Pre-dawn arrival allows capturing the alpenglow on the 14er before wildflower fields light up.
Photography Base at The Lumberyard
The Lumberyard Condos's central location means you can reach every major photo location in 15 minutes — essential for chasing golden hour at multiple spots in a single evening. The proximity to the canyon rim overlooks is a photographer's dream.
