Best Snowshoe Trails Near Ouray

The Ouray Perimeter Trail transforms into a spectacular snowshoe route in winter — the canyon views are equally dramatic under snow, and the trail is typically broken by earlier visitors. Start from the north end of town near the amphitheater.

The lower Bear Creek Trail and Cascade Falls Trail are also excellent winter snowshoe routes. Cascade Falls is especially dramatic in winter when the waterfall partially freezes, creating an ice sculpture framed by snow-covered pines.

Snowshoe Rentals and Safety

Snowshoe rentals are available at Ouray Mountain Sports and other outdoor retailers on Main Street. Modern snowshoes with crampons are essential on icy canyon trail sections — regular hiking footwear is not adequate.

Winter canyon trails can become icy and exposed. Carry trekking poles, start early in the day, and turn back if conditions deteriorate. Let someone know your planned route.
