Ouray Colorado Stargazing Guide

Far from city light pollution, Ouray's canyon skies reveal the full glory of the Milky Way — a stargazing experience most people never get.

At a Glance

  • Sky Darkness: Bortle 2–3
  • Milky Way Core: May–Oct
  • Best Elevation: Red Mtn Pass
  • Moon Phase: Plan for new moon

Why Ouray's Skies Are World-Class

The nearest major city to Ouray is Grand Junction (2 hours northwest) and Denver (5+ hours east) — which means minimal light pollution across the southern sky. The San Juan basin rates Bortle 2–3 on clear nights, comparable to the best dark sky destinations in the American West.

At 7,760 feet elevation with minimal moisture, the atmosphere above Ouray is unusually transparent. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye from May through October — not as a faint smear, but as a bright, detailed band arcing overhead.

Best Stargazing Locations

Red Mountain Pass on the Million Dollar Highway (11,018 ft) offers the darkest accessible sky closest to Ouray — pull off at the summit and look south for Scorpius and the Milky Way core in summer. The box canyon itself creates ambient glow from town, so the pass is better than downtown.

The high plateaus along the Alpine Loop are even darker — if you're camping or staying overnight on the route, the stargazing is exceptional. No ambient light for 30+ miles in every direction.

Stargazing from The Lumberyard

The canyon box blocks some of the northern sky from downtown Ouray, but the ridge above town is a 15-minute walk and opens up to full-dome dark sky. Many guests drive 10 minutes to Red Mountain Pass for serious Milky Way shooting.
