Summer Hiking and Wildflowers
Late July is the peak of wildflower season in the San Juan high country. Yankee Boy Basin, American Basin, and the trail to Blue Lakes are blanketed in columbines, paintbrush, and lupine. These are among the most photographed landscapes in Colorado.
Summer hiking on the Ouray Perimeter Trail offers views into the canyon and above the rim. The Bear Creek National Recreation Trail climbs to the old Yellow Jacket Mine through a canyon so steep it feels like a slot canyon.
4WD Adventures and Day Trips
All major 4WD routes open by late June. The Alpine Loop, Engineer Pass, Imogene Pass, and Yankee Boy Basin are all accessible. Jeep rentals are available in town — no prior 4WD experience required for most routes.
Summer afternoon thunderstorms are part of the San Juan experience. Plan alpine activities for morning, then head lower in the afternoon. The pattern is reliable — clear mornings, storms by 2 PM, clearing by evening.
Summer at The Lumberyard Condos
Summer is the most in-demand season at The Lumberyard. The dog-friendly policy means the whole family — including four-legged members — can enjoy the San Juans together. The central location saves driving time when you're chasing morning light on the trails.
Book early for July and August — peak summer weeks fill months in advance. Reserve directly at ouraycondos.com for the best availability.
