What Is the Ouray Via Ferrata?
Via ferrata (Italian for 'iron road') is a style of protected climbing route using iron rungs, cables, and ladders bolted to the rock face. The Ouray Via Ferrata ascends the canyon walls above town, with exposure that puts you above the rooftops of Ouray looking down into the valley.
The main route begins above the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and climbs through several technical sections with iron rungs. The experience combines hiking, scrambling, and exposed climbing — connected to the rock via a via ferrata lanyard clipped to a continuous cable.
Gear and Guided Options
Self-guided via ferrata requires a via ferrata lanyard (different from a standard climbing harness lanyard), helmet, and appropriate footwear. Rentals are available at Ouray Mountain Sports. San Juan Mountain Guides offers guided half-day and full-day via ferrata experiences.
For first-timers, a guided trip is strongly recommended. The exposure is significant and the rescue implications of a fall without proper gear are serious. With a guide, it's an accessible and transformative experience.
Stay Steps from the Canyon at The Lumberyard
The Lumberyard Condos at 55 4th Avenue is 10 minutes' walk from the via ferrata approach trail — start your day from the front door. The full kitchen means a proper breakfast before the climb and a recovery meal after.
Book your via ferrata trip to Ouray at ouraycondos.com. A two-night minimum lets you recover properly between the approach and the climb.
