The Best Month Nobody Talks About
Ice climbers in the know consider February the finest month in Ouray. The Ice Festival crowds are gone. The routes are in excellent condition — sometimes the best of the season, as cold temperatures have had weeks to work. The park is open, uncrowded, and entirely yours on weekday mornings.
February temperatures in Ouray hover in the low-to-mid 30s during the day and can drop well below zero overnight — exactly what the ice needs. Routes that were forming and changing in December and January are now stable, fully developed, and at their most climbable.
Beyond Ice Climbing in February
The hot springs are the perfect companion to a cold February in Ouray. Soak in 104°F water after a day in the canyon, then walk back to The Lumberyard for dinner by the gas fireplace. Repeat. This rhythm — canyon in the morning, hot springs in the late afternoon, fireplace in the evening — is how a perfect Ouray February day goes.
Telluride Ski Resort is 45 minutes away and in peak winter condition through February. A day trip to ski Telluride from an Ouray base is one of the great Colorado winter experiences — you get the mountain without the Telluride lodging prices.
Staying at The Lumberyard in February
February rates are often lower than the Ice Festival peak period, making it one of the better value windows of the year for a winter Ouray trip. The Lumberyard's five condos are all available, and weekday stays in February can often be booked with reasonable advance notice. Weekend dates still fill — Ouray has become more widely known, and winter weekend bookings reflect that.
