Ouray at Its Best
July is the month when every superlative about Ouray is true simultaneously. The wildflowers in Yankee Boy Basin peak around the second to third week of the month — columbines, Indian paintbrush, bluebells, and a dozen other species covering the alpine meadows below Mt. Sneffels in colors that don't look real until you're standing in them. All 4WD roads are open. All trails are accessible. The waterfalls are still running strong from snowmelt.
The 4th of July is the month's centerpiece event: fireworks launched from the canyon walls above Ouray, exploding at eye level with the town, with the surrounding peaks as a backdrop. Ouray's July 4th celebration is consistently rated among the best in Colorado — and the Amphitheater condo at The Lumberyard has one of the finest deck views in town for the show.
Planning a July Trip
July is when The Lumberyard books out fastest. 4th of July week can be fully reserved 4–6 months in advance. The weeks of July 10–25 (peak wildflower season) are the next most competitive. If July is your target, book early and book direct — platform fees add 10–14% to your total with zero additional benefit.
Afternoon thunderstorms are a regular feature of July in the San Juans. They typically build from noon through early afternoon and clear by evening. Plan high-elevation activities for morning hours and have a flexible afternoon contingency.
