The Gates Open
June is when the San Juans fully unlock. Engineer Pass and Imogene Pass typically open by mid-to-late June, depending on snow conditions. Yankee Boy Basin is accessible. Hiking trails at all elevations are open. The jeep roads that were buried under 10 feet of snow in January are dry and ready.
The wildflowers move up through the month in a visible progression — lower meadows blazing by early June, mid-elevation basins hitting their first flush of color by month's end. The peak wildflower display in Yankee Boy Basin and on the trails above 11,000 feet comes in July, but June offers a preview that's stunning in its own right.
Why June Is Often Better Than July
July is busier, hotter (relatively), and more expensive than June in Ouray. June offers essentially the same outdoor access — especially by late June — with meaningfully less competition for trailhead parking, restaurant tables, and condo availability. For experienced mountain travelers who've been to popular destinations in peak season, June in Ouray is a known-good strategy.
Late June, from around the 20th through the 30th, is arguably the single best value window of the summer season. Full access, minimal crowds, and rates below the July-August peak.
