Spring Opening in the San Juans
May marks the transition from shoulder season to the beginning of summer access in the San Juans. Lower-elevation trails open progressively through the month. The Perimeter Trail and riverside paths are fully accessible. Some jeep roads at intermediate elevations become drivable by mid-May in average snow years.
The wildflowers begin in May at lower elevations — yellow mule-ears and other early species appear along the river corridor and valley floor while the high peaks still hold deep snowpack. It's a month of layers: winter above, spring below, everything in between.
Beat the Summer Crowds
May is one of the last months before Ouray's summer visitor numbers climb significantly. Staying in May means the restaurants have your attention, the trails have your footprints, and The Lumberyard's outdoor grill sees its first use of the season. The weather is warm enough for comfortable outdoor activity but cool enough that afternoons in the sun feel energizing rather than draining.
By late May, Ouray is approaching peak spring conditions. The rivers are full. The aspens have leafed out. A few high roads may be opening on their south-facing slopes. The town is starting to wake up.
