The Transition Month
October is one of the most dramatic months in the San Juans. Early in the month, the last aspens hold their gold at lower elevations while snow has already returned to the high peaks. By mid-October, the color has faded and the mountains take on the spare, austere beauty of pre-winter — bare aspen groves, dusted peaks, and the particular silence that settles over mountain towns when the summer traffic disappears.
The 4WD high roads close through October as snow makes them impassable or the road authorities officially gate them shut for winter. Yankee Boy Basin, Imogene, and Engineer Pass are typically all closed by late October. Lower routes remain open through the month.
October in Ouray
The hot springs are at their best in October — cool air, warm water, and a post-summer quiet that makes an evening soak feel luxurious rather than crowded. Several Ouray restaurants offer their best fall menus in October. The town has a local, unhurried quality that summer visitors never see.
This is also hunting season in the surrounding San Juan National Forest and BLM lands. If you're hiking in October, wear orange and stay aware of your surroundings. The backcountry has a different energy during hunting season — something between quiet and attentive.
