Two Dramatic Canyons, 40 Miles Apart
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park contains one of the deepest, steepest, and darkest gorges in North America. At its narrowest point, the canyon walls are only 40 feet apart at the river while rising 2,700 feet above — a slot of darkness so deep and narrow that sunlight reaches the bottom for only minutes each day. The Gunnison River drops an average of 34 feet per mile through the canyon — steeper than the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
Ouray's box canyon offers a different but equally compelling vertical experience. Where Black Canyon is dark and inaccessible (only technical routes reach the river), Ouray's canyon puts you on the canyon floor, with the walls rising 2,000 feet above your head and hot springs emerging from the volcanic rock at your feet. Together, the two canyons represent the full range of Colorado's canyon geology.
Black Canyon as a Day Trip from Ouray
From The Lumberyard Condos, the South Rim of Black Canyon is a 50-minute drive north — the same route you'd take to reach Montrose Airport or Delta. The South Rim Visitor Center and the Gunnison Point overlook are among the most jaw-dropping canyon viewpoints in the National Park System: the walls drop 1,800 feet from the rim to the invisible river below, and the scale of the darkness is genuinely disorienting.
The Warner Point Nature Trail, Painted Wall overlook (home to Colorado's tallest cliff face), and the Oak Flat Loop are all excellent half-day hikes that don't require technical gear. The Gunnison Route, the park's only non-technical access to the river, is a steep scramble recommended only for experienced hikers with a permit.
Why Base in Ouray for a Black Canyon Trip
Montrose is the most common overnight base for Black Canyon visitors, but Ouray's lodging quality, hot springs, and mountain town character make it a far more compelling choice for visitors who want more than a motel near the park entrance. The 50-minute drive from Ouray to the South Rim is a small price for an evening in one of Colorado's most beautiful towns.
The combination of Black Canyon in the morning and Ouray Hot Springs in the evening is one of the Western Slope's most rewarding day structures — canyon-scale vertigo resolved in 104°F geothermal pools at sunset.
