Ancient Ruins and Living Mountains: Cortez to Ouray
Cortez is the commercial hub of the Montezuma Valley and the primary overnight base for Mesa Verde National Park. The town itself is functional rather than scenic, but its position at the confluence of Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites — Hovenweep, Canyons of the Ancients, and Mesa Verde within an hour's radius — makes it an essential stop on a Four Corners itinerary.
Ouray, 80 miles northeast via Durango and Ridgway, adds an entirely different dimension: a living Victorian mountain town at the dramatic center of the San Juan Mountains. The two-hour drive on US-160 east and US-550 north is a full landscape transition — from the arid mesa country of the Colorado Plateau into the forested canyon approaches of the San Juans.
Pairing Mesa Verde and Ouray in One Trip
A San Juan–Four Corners circuit is a natural multi-day itinerary: fly into Montrose or Durango, drive to Cortez for two nights at Mesa Verde, then move northeast to Ouray for three nights of mountain time. The Lumberyard Condos serves as the ideal second-half base — full kitchens mean you're not dependent on restaurants after driving dusty park roads all day.
From Ouray, Mesa Verde is an easy two-hour day trip, allowing guests who want more time at the ruins to make a second visit. The drive through Ridgway, Telluride country, and Dolores offers continuously changing scenery and several optional stops including the Dolores River Canyon and Lizard Head Pass.
