Lake City, the Alpine Loop, and Ouray

Lake City is one of Colorado's smallest and most isolated incorporated towns — a community of a few hundred permanent residents tucked into the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River valley at nearly 9,000 feet. It's the kind of place where the entire downtown fits on two streets, the fishing is exceptional, and the San Juan peaks rise in every direction. It also sits at the eastern terminus of the Alpine Loop, one of the most celebrated 4WD circuits in the American West.

The Alpine Loop connects Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray through two high passes: Engineer Pass (12,800 ft) and Cinnamon Pass (12,620 ft). Running the full circuit from Ouray — out Engineer, down to Lake City, back up Cinnamon to Silverton, then north on the Million Dollar Highway home — is an all-day adventure that ranks among the defining experiences of Colorado's backcountry.

Why Ouray Makes the Better Home Base

Lake City's remote setting is part of its appeal, but it also means limited dining options, minimal lodging variety, and a 45-mile drive on winding mountain roads to reach the nearest major grocery store. Ouray, by contrast, has a vibrant downtown with multiple restaurants, the geothermal hot springs, and easy access to the northern San Juan passes — while still being close enough to Lake City for a full day's excursion.

The Ouray Hot Springs Pool after a dusty Alpine Loop run is one of the great reward pairings in Colorado adventure travel. You return to town tired and satisfied, slip into the 104°F therapy pool as the canyon walls go dark around you, and understand exactly why people come back to Ouray year after year.

Day Trips from Ouray to Lake City

The paved route from Ouray to Lake City (US-550 south to CO-149) takes about 90 minutes and passes through the broad Gunnison Basin — a completely different landscape from the enclosed San Juan canyons, offering a sense of scale and openness that's genuinely refreshing mid-trip. Lake City's historic downtown, the Lake San Cristobal fishery, and the Ute Ulay Mill ruins are all accessible on a comfortable day trip.

For 4WD trips, staging from Ouray and running Engineer Pass to Lake City and back via Cinnamon Pass is the classic loop. Most jeep rental outfitters in Ouray offer guided or self-guided versions of this circuit. The views from Engineer Pass — looking north over the Uncompahgre Plateau and south into the headwaters of the Lake Fork — are among the most expansive in Colorado.
