Ouray operates on a completely different geological and visual register. The Drive Between Moab and Ouray
The direct route east on CO-90 through Bedrock and Paradox Valley is a spectacular two-lane drive across the Colorado Plateau's edge — uranium country, salt anticlines, and wide-open rangeland that gives way to the mountains as you approach Montrose and turn south. Allow 2.5–3 hours with a stop at Paradox Valley for one of the more surreal geological formations in Colorado.
An alternative route via I-70 east to Grand Junction and US-50 south adds 30–40 minutes but passes the Colorado National Monument — a worthy detour that turns the drive into its own half-day experience.
Combining Moab and Ouray for the Ultimate Canyon Itinerary
A Moab–Ouray circuit is the ultimate canyon itinerary: red rock plateau on one end, volcanic mountain canyons on the other. Stay in Moab for Arches and Canyonlands, then drive east to Ouray for the Million Dollar Highway, hot springs, and jeep trails. Two completely different expressions of the canyon landscape, close enough to combine without backtracking.
Summer travelers particularly benefit from the Moab-to-Ouray transition — Moab's summer heat (often exceeding 100°F in July) makes afternoon activity difficult, while Ouray's canyon shading and elevation keep temperatures comfortable throughout the day.
