The Character of a Cabin, the Comfort of a Condo

When most people search for a "cabin in Ouray," what they're really looking for is a specific feeling: a mountain setting, historic character, a fireplace, a view of the peaks, and enough space to spread out with family or friends. The Lumberyard Condos deliver all of that — inside a building that's been standing in Ouray since 1892 — without the tradeoffs that often come with traditional cabins.

Remote mountain cabins often mean unreliable plumbing, limited connectivity, no washer and dryer, and a long drive to town for groceries. The Lumberyard sits on the Uncompahgre River in the center of Ouray, five minutes on foot from Main Street, with every amenity a well-equipped home provides.

A Building With 130 Years of History

The building was the Rice Lumber Company yard — the primary timber supplier for Ouray's silver mining era. When silver prices collapsed in the 1890s, Ouray reinvented itself. The lumber yard outlasted the mines, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and the long quiet decades before the outdoor recreation boom rediscovered the San Juan Mountains.

A complete renovation turned the building into five individual condos while keeping the structure and its place in the Ouray streetscape intact. The result is something genuinely rare: a fully modern vacation rental inside a building that carries 130 years of Colorado mountain history.

Better Than a Remote Cabin for Most Trips

Remote cabins outside Ouray offer isolation and privacy — which is the right call for some trips. But for most vacation travelers, the Lumberyard's location is a genuine advantage. You can leave your car parked for days. Your kids can walk to the ice cream shop on Main Street. You don't need to plan dinner around a 20-minute drive each way. The hot springs are 9 blocks away. The Ice Park is two blocks.

If the goal is to be immersed in Ouray — to feel the town, hear the river, walk everywhere — then a centrally located condo in a historic building is a better choice than an isolated cabin a few miles out of town.

Which Unit Is Right for You?

The five condos each have a distinct personality. The Hot Springs Suite on the top floor offers a private deck with the solitude of your own view of the flowing river below and beautiful mountain views as the backdrop. The Amphitheater has the best deck for watching Ouray's famous canyon-wall fireworks. The three ground-floor units — The Crawler, The Nordic, and The Ice Axe — sit beside the river with direct courtyard access, making them ideal for groups or families with dogs.

Units sleep between 5 and 10 guests. Every unit has a full kitchen, in-unit laundry, and a private entrance. Four of the five units have a gas fireplace — all except The Amphitheater.
