Why Ouray Is the Jeep Capital of Colorado

Ouray sits at 7,760 feet in a natural bowl surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks. The San Juan Mountains that wall the town in on three sides also produce some of the most dramatic 4WD terrain in the lower 48. From the edge of town, a network of high-clearance roads fans out in every direction — connecting to ghost towns, alpine meadows, abandoned mine sites, and passes that top out above 13,000 feet with views into multiple mountain ranges.

The Ouray Jeep Jamboree, held every summer, draws thousands of off-road enthusiasts. But you don't need to be here for the event to experience what makes Ouray legendary for 4WD. The trails are open all summer and most of the fall, and many are accessible to stock high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. Side-by-sides are welcome on Ouray's trails as well — the same network of passes and alpine roads is open to UTVs, and rentals are available in town.

The Trails Everyone Comes For

Engineer Pass (12,800 ft) — One of the most accessible high passes in the San Juans, connecting Ouray to Lake City via American Flats. The views from the top take in dozens of 13,000-foot peaks. Rated difficult, suitable for well-equipped stock vehicles.

Black Bear Pass (12,840 ft) — The most photographed and most feared pass in Colorado. One-way descent into Telluride with switchbacks carved into cliff faces. Expert level, not recommended for stock vehicles or the faint of heart. The views are unforgettable.

Imogene Pass (13,114 ft) — Connects Ouray to Telluride over a dramatic high pass, through the ghost town of Tomboy. One of the highest maintained roads in North America. Runs in both directions; a full day out-and-back or loop.

Yankee Boy Basin — The most accessible and wildflower-rich destination from Ouray. Suitable for most 4WD vehicles, leading to spectacular alpine scenery below Mt. Sneffels (14,158 ft). Peak wildflower season is mid-July through August.

Jeep Rentals in Ouray

If you're not towing your own rig, several outfitters on Main Street rent equipped Jeeps and side-by-sides by the day. Switzerland of America Jeep Rental and Ouray Jeep Tours are both walking distance from The Lumberyard. Guided half-day and full-day tours are also available if you'd rather have a local lead the way — particularly useful on technical trails like Black Bear.

Base Camp at The Lumberyard

After a full day running trails — dusty, sun-beaten, adrenaline-spent — the Lumberyard gives you everything you need to reset. Each condo has a full kitchen for cooking real food, an in-unit washer and dryer for dirty gear and trail clothes, and enough space to spread out maps and plan tomorrow's route. The outdoor grill in the courtyard is a natural gathering point for multi-condo groups.

Groups of friends or families often book multiple ground-floor condos together. The Crawler, Nordic, and Ice Axe each sleep 6, giving you 18 beds across three side-by-side units with a shared outdoor space. It's one of the better group setups in Ouray for a jeeping trip.
