The Million Dollar Highway: US-550 South
US-550 between Ouray and Silverton — commonly called the Million Dollar Highway — is one of the most scenic drives in the country. It's also genuinely nerve-wracking for first-timers. The road climbs over Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet with sharp switchbacks, no guardrails on many sections, and sheer drop-offs inches from the pavement.
Drive during daylight hours if at all possible. The road is passable in a standard car when dry, but the narrow lanes and blind corners reward caution. Keep your speed well below the posted limit and use pull-outs to let faster local traffic pass. Never stop in the road for photos — use designated pull-outs only.
4WD Roads and Alpine Loop Access
Ouray is the northern gateway to the Alpine Loop — a backcountry byway connecting to Lake City and Silverton via Engineer and Cinnamon Passes. This route requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle with low-range capability. Rental Jeeps are available in town if you're arriving in a sedan or standard SUV.
Never attempt Engineer Pass or Cinnamon Pass in a 2WD vehicle, a low-clearance SUV, or during inclement weather. The roads become deeply rutted, rocky, and narrow above treeline. Cell service disappears entirely in the backcountry — download offline maps (Gaia GPS or OnX Offroad) before you leave town.
Arriving in Ouray: Parking and Navigation
Ouray's Main Street is a single corridor through the canyon. Arriving from the north (Montrose/Ridgway), you'll pass the Ouray Hot Springs Pool on your right before entering town. The Lumberyard Condos is at 55 4th Avenue — a short block off Main Street, easy to find even after dark.
Free parking is available throughout town. Municipal lots sit at the north and south ends of Main Street. The town is walkable once you arrive — most restaurants, shops, and trailheads are within five minutes on foot from the Lumberyard. You can park your car for the duration of your stay and explore entirely on foot.
Fuel, Cell Service, and Emergency Planning
Fill your gas tank in Montrose or Ridgway before descending into Ouray. The town has one gas station with limited hours. On alpine roads and 4WD routes, fuel consumption increases significantly with elevation and low-range driving. Don't count on finding fuel once you're in the backcountry.
Cell service in Ouray proper is serviceable on Verizon and AT&T, but disappears on mountain passes and 4WD roads. Share your itinerary with someone before heading into the backcountry, and consider a personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger for remote routes. The Lumberyard Condos offers fast Wi-Fi — use it to download maps and route information before you head out each day.
