The Best Routes to Ouray

From Denver, the most scenic approach is I-25 south to Walsenburg, then US-160 west through the San Luis Valley and Wolf Creek Pass, then US-550 north through Durango, Silverton, and the Million Dollar Highway. This adds roughly 45 minutes over the more direct US-285 route via Poncha Springs but delivers dramatically better scenery.

From the north, US-550 south through Montrose and Ridgway is the standard approach — straightforward and beautiful. From Albuquerque, US-550 north through Durango and Silverton puts you on the Million Dollar Highway for the final dramatic approach into Ouray. Consider the direction of arrival when planning your route for maximum scenic impact.

Worthwhile Stops Along the Way

From the Denver route via Poncha Springs, the Great Sand Dunes National Park makes a logical first-night stop — it's 2.5 hours from Denver and 2.5 hours from Ouray. The dunes are staggeringly beautiful and contrast perfectly with the alpine canyon scenery that follows. Alamosa has solid restaurant options for a dinner stop.

From the north (Montrose), Ridgway State Park offers easy hiking and swimming in a reservoir with mountain views — a nice stretch stop 15 miles before Ouray. Ridgway's small downtown also has a good bakery and coffee shop. The entire US-550 corridor between Montrose and Ouray through the Uncompahgre Valley is scenic enough to justify slowing down.

Day Trips from Ouray

Ouray's location makes it an ideal base for San Juan Mountains day trips. Silverton is 24 miles south via the Million Dollar Highway — budget two hours for the round trip plus time in town. Lake City via the Alpine Loop is a full-day backcountry adventure (4WD required). Telluride is 50 miles by road and worth a day trip for its gondola and Main Street.

Gunnison and Crested Butte are roughly 90 minutes northeast via Montrose — a feasible day trip if you want a different kind of mountain town. The San Juan Skyway — a 236-mile loop connecting Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Cortez (near Mesa Verde), and Telluride — can be driven in a day or broken into two days with stops.

Arriving and Settling in at The Lumberyard Condos

After hours of mountain driving, arriving at a centrally located condo rather than hunting for a restaurant and hotel lobby is genuinely restorative. The Lumberyard Condos at 55 4th Avenue sits one block off Main Street — easy to find, easy to park, and immediately walkable to dining and the hot springs.

Full kitchens mean you can shop on the way in (City Market in Ridgway is your last good grocery stop) and have everything you need for breakfast and trail lunches. After a long drive, a soak at the hot springs followed by dinner on a Main Street patio is the perfect transition from road-trip mode to vacation mode. Book direct at ouraycondos.com.
