Why Shoulder Season in Ouray Is Underrated

Most first-time visitors schedule their Ouray trip during peak summer (July–August) because that's when conditions are certain and the experience is easy to plan. Shoulder-season visitors — the locals, repeat visitors, and savvy travelers — know that September is often better in every respect except peak-summer trail accessibility.

Shoulder season offers: smaller crowds, shorter restaurant waits, easier parking, more accommodation availability, and often better light for photography. The trade-off is some uncertainty — a late May snowstorm or a cool September week are possible. That unpredictability is also part of the adventure.

Late May and Early June in Ouray

Late May marks the transition from mud season to summer. Lower-elevation trails — Cascade Falls, Box Canyon, the Perimeter Trail — clear of snow and become beautiful. Wildflowers begin appearing at lower elevations. The town is quiet and welcoming, with restaurants and shops fully open but not yet overwhelmed.

The big caveat: most 4WD roads don't open until mid-to-late June. Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass typically open in early June depending on snowpack, but confirm with local sources before counting on backcountry access. If 4WD is your main goal, early June is a bit of a gamble. If you're here for hot springs, hiking, and scenery, it's perfect.

September and October: The Sweet Spot

September is most experienced travelers' top recommendation for Ouray. All summer amenities are still running, all trails and 4WD roads are open, but crowds thin significantly after Labor Day. The light changes as the sun angles lower — creating warm, golden tones that summer's high sun can't match.

Late September brings aspen color to the high country. The Owl Creek Pass and Million Dollar Highway corridors turn brilliant gold and orange — some of the best fall color accessible by road anywhere in Colorado. Book accommodations early for late September even in shoulder season, as the fall color crowds can rival summer peaks.
